In the view of the present-day company boss Dr. Andrea Zagato, it was now time to put a new joint project with Aston Martin on the road, to follow in the tracks of the super-light DB4 Zagato of 1961 and the Gianni and Elio Zagato brothers' V8 Coupé and Volante, controversial because of the modern appearance. Presenting this view to Dr. Ulrich in the fall of 2001, he met with the approval of Aston Martin's chief. The design is agreed upon in all its details by the following January, so that it can be jointly presented at the 2002 Geneva motor show.
In contrast to the "Superleggera" of those days-designed for racing, andonly 19 examples built-the two-seater DB7 Zagato is no thoroughbred racing auto.
Hiding behind its large "snout, " the dimensions of which exceed those of the 1952 Ferrari 250S Berlinetta, lies a Granturismo on the basis of a DB7 Vantage chassis shortened by 2 and a half inches. Faced with 147 seriously interested customers willing to dig deep into their pockets to the tune of almost 260, 000 Euro, the producers agreed upon the construction of 99 Zagato coupés. Coupés because, in view of this welcome situation, it is intended to offer an open-topped variation-also 99 vehicles-for sale as well.
